Pedal-powered plane wins novel flight race

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

Skydiving and paragliding - bored already? Soon you could cycle into the sky instead. A new competition called the Icarus Cup is challenging human-powered aircraft to a variety of races, hoping to turn the activity into a new extreme sport.

Five teams took part in the inaugural event in mid-July at Lasham Airfield in the outskirts of London. In this video, you can watch the winning plane, called Airglow, as it covers a kilometre in just over 2 minutes.

The veteran aircraft, built in 1990, was in storage for over 20 years before it was restored for the competition.
