Romney angers Palestinians with pro-Israel comment

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney's campaign stop in Israel left behind furious Palestinians charging that the Republican presidential candidate hasn't fully grasped the complexities of one of the world's most intractable conflicts.

Romney's sweeping embrace of Israeli government positions ? especially on the Iranian nuclear program ? came as no surprise. But Palestinian ? and some Israeli ? critics say he overshot by seeming to snub the Palestinians' president, dismiss their claims to Jerusalem, and suggest their culture is inferior to Israel's.

That came on Monday when Romney addressed the stark economic differences between Israel ? a high-tech powerhouse with the per capita income of a developed nation ? and the poorer Palestinians. Romney told an audience of affluent Jewish donors ? including gambling magnate Sheldon Adelson, who is pumping millions into a crusade to defeat President Barack Obama ? that some economic historians have theorized that "culture makes all the difference."

"You notice a stark difference in economic vitality" between Israel and the Palestinians, Romney said, proceeding to badly flub the economic output numbers on both sides. "And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," he said, citing an innovative business climate and the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances.

Palestinian leaders were outraged.

"The statement reflects a clear racist spirit," said Palestinian Labor Minister Ahmed Majdalani. "If Romney came here to rally Israeli and Jewish support in the U.S. election, he can do that without insulting the Palestinian people."

As criticism mounted as he traveled from Israel to Poland later Monday, campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the candidate's comments were "grossly mischaracterized." The Republican's campaign contended Romney's comparison of countries that are close to each other and have wide income disparities ? the U.S. and Mexico, Chile and Ecuador ? showed his comments were broader than just the comparison between Israel and Palestine. While speaking to U.S. audiences, Romney often highlights culture as a key to economic success and emphasizes the power of the American entrepreneurial spirit compared to the values of other countries.

Palestinians noted that Romney's comments did not address the stifling effect of Israel's occupation. Although Israel withdrew its soldiers and settlers from Gaza in 2005, it continues to restrict Palestinian trade and movement there and in the West Bank. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have said repeatedly the Palestinian economy can only grow in a sustainable way of Israel lifts those restrictions.

Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian official, said Romney's comments are hurting U.S. efforts to restore Washington's standing in the Muslim and Arab world.

"There are 57 Muslim and Arab countries here, and while U.S. diplomats are exerting every possible effort to explain their position, here comes Romney, with no knowledge of the region, its history and culture, and gives such statements, which will only serve as ammunition in the hands of extremists in this region," Erekat said.

In recent years, the U.S. has remained constant in its support for establishing a Palestinian state alongside Israel, regardless of whether a Democrat or a Republican sat in the White House. But two decades of on-again, off-again U.S.-led peace efforts have been bedeviled by violence and have not nudged the sides towards a final peace deal that would settle borders and other issues.

"We need the U.S. as an honest broker for peace, between us and the Palestinians," said Alon Liel, a former senior Israeli Foreign Ministry official. "It's not enough being a friend. If we don't have the honest broker, we don't have peace. There are no signs that Romney understands it."

Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, a former Israeli ambassador to Washington, came to Romney's defense, saying he was impressed by "his intellect, by his breadth of knowledge and his vision."

"It is unfortunate that the Palestinians find every reason and opportunity to discomfit or to criticize or to attack Israel or anyone who pays respect to Israel and Jewish culture or anyone who supports Israel," Ayalon said.

It's become the norm for U.S. presidential hopefuls to make a stop in Israel in hopes of winning support from Jewish voters in the U.S., and Palestinian officials say Romney's embrace of Israel's positions was expected, especially with polls showing a close race. Romney apparently hoped to exploit the sense that Obama's relations with Israelis and the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been rocky.

Israeli officials received Romney warmly as he agreed with Israel that Jerusalem is Israel's capital, disregarding the Palestinians' claim to the war-won eastern sector, annexed by Israel in 1967 in a move that is not internationally recognized. Romney also suggested he was open to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, something the Israelis have long sought but the U.S. has refused to do because it would imply recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the entire city.

Romney also spoke categorically about protecting Israel from Iran's nuclear ambitions, which both Israel and the U.S. think are directed at producing bombs, despite Tehran's denial. He also cancelled a planned meeting with Israel's opposition Labor Party leader, sparking concerns among Israeli commentators that Netanyahu and his visitor appeared so politically allied that it might endanger Israel's standing in Washington if Obama were reelected.

During his 36 hours in Israel, Romney did not make the 30-minute trip to the West Bank or seek a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, though he did meet briefly with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad in Jerusalem. Romney left Israel on Monday.

Romney's remarks also managed to offend some Jews, who thought the talk about Jewish prosperity played into an anti-Semitic stereotype. "When I heard the association between Jews and money, it really caused me some uncomfortable feeling, I must say, because that was what was said by anti-Semites all over the years," said Abraham Diskin, a political science professor at the Inter-Disciplinary Center outside Tel Aviv.

I know I promised that the next blog would be a BBQ CFD analysis, but I came across this model and it was too interesting to pass up.? A number of years ago, I was flipping through the channel guide and saw a show about choppers.? At first, I thought I read copters, and being an aerospace engineer, watching a show on helicopters was something I was interested in.? Of course the show was about motorcycles, but the first episode I saw was of a fighter jet inspired chopper.? From that point on, I was hooked on all these types of motorcycle shows.

The other day, I came across this CAD model on www.grabcad.com, of a person?s dream chopper.? I wondered about the aerodynamics of a chopper, as just a couple weeks earlier I had seen a ?Mythbuster? episode where they tested the fuel efficiency of a motorcycle vs a car.? The motorcycle killed on fuel efficiency, but was poor on air pollution.? Then they made an aerodynamic shell and tested it again to see if they could improve the fuel efficiency enough to overcome the bad air pollution.? Interesting stuff for sure.?

I didn?t get to making a CAD person riding the chopper, as then I?m sure most of the drag would have to do with his riding position (leaning forward vs straight up) and really what I was interested in was the bike itself.

Here are some of my results.? Now, the bike looks fast even, but in this first cut plot showing air speed and the mesh, doesn?t it look like it?s going even faster?? If we look at the second contour plot of air speed, this time cropping out any air speed faster than 70 mph, you can see how far downstream the wake of the chopper extends.? You can also see at some point, the wake becomes unstable and oscillates, creating that wiggle at the end.? But I also like this plot because it shows that the wake also is very compact in the width direction.? If you were a person on the grass, you wouldn?t feel the air move much when the motorcycle passes by, unlike when a transport truck passes by and you definitely feel the air move.

If we change the contour to pressure, and zoom in a bit, we can see areas that are affecting the drag on the bike.? You can also see this on the headlight, which surprised me a bit.? I was thinking the engine would have a lot of drag, but the headlights?? Well it?s not just the headlights in this area; there are also the metal cross members that attach the risers to the body of the motorcycle.? These are solid chunks of metal, so no air can get by these as well. ?Also, the headlights are experiencing fresh high speed air, so that?s creating more pressure.? The engine is seeing the air that has been slowed when going around the front wheel, so the pressure isn?t as high.

Next I made an isosurface connecting places with the same velocity values, one at a speed of 45 mph, and another at 70 mph.? I added some grid lines to help show the contours of the isosurface.? This really helps to show the extent of the wake, with the 45 mph isosurface being the air that we have greatly reduced its speed, and 70 mph isosurface showing the extent of the air we have slightly disturbed.? One thing of interest to me was the aerodynamics of the wheels.? I know in open wheel racing, the spent a lot of research on the aerodynamics of exposed wheels.? When it comes to custom choppers, something that is always done is creating a cool looking wheel.? I?m sure every design could be improved aerodynamically.? I created a surface plot of velocity on the front wheel to see what I could see.? Obviously velocity is zero on a surface, so this plot is offset into the air slightly to get the near wall air speed.?

You can see in the tread area of the middle of the wheel there is a low speed zone.? You can also see on the spokes near the rim, there is a lot of yellow high speed air, whereas near the hub behind the brake disk the air speed is pretty low.? Now these wheels are pretty simple by chopper standards, so it would be interesting in the future to compare the drag and torque results for these wheels verses some other design.?

Of course any analysis isn?t complete without some videos.? First are some streamlines flowing around the bike.? The interesting thing to me, is the air going by the front wheel.? Even though the wheel is rotating clockwise, you can see how the air moving over top of the wheel flows downward, because of the engine.? You can see some clockwise flow within the wheel, but in general you have competing airflows in this area.? Now because the air has a downward trajectory as it goes towards the engine, I think this would reduce the drag effects of the engine because we aren?t getting any stagnation points on the front of the engine.? The air is being deflected downward and away from the engine.

Another air flow we maybe interested in is seeing where the exhaust air goes.? Every custom chopper design has to have cool pipes, so some designs may put the hot exhaust gases where we don?t want them.? Looking at the animation, we can see some exhaust gas gets entrained with the air circulating around the rear wheel, but the exhaust gas cools very quickly.? Again, I took an educated guess for the gas flow rate here.

Similarly, we would be interested in seeing how the air gets to our engine intake.? We don?t want to put our intake in an area with poor airflow that could starve the engine and reduce the power output.? We can see here, that other than a little wiggle to go around the front wheel, the air has a nice straight line into the intake.

Of course we could dissect this model further and looking forces and torques numbers on different components or the entire chopper.? But I think I?ve learned a good amount about the aerodynamics of choppers.? I hope you did to.? This took very little time to analyze as I had the CAD geometry, and FloEFD works within the CAD system and automatically meshes the model.? As such, I don?t want to get too deep into dissecting these results.? Instead I would like to save some time to work on the BBQ analysis before the summer is over, so we will skip the numbers on this analysis.? Until next time?

Administration projects $1.2T 2012 budget deficit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House predicts this year's federal budget deficit will end up at $1.2 trillion, marking the fourth consecutive year of trillion dollar-plus deficits during President Barack Obama's administration.

The bleak figures, while expected, are sure to add fuel to the already heated presidential campaign, in which Obama's handling of the economy and the budget is a main topic. Friday's release came as the government announced that U.S. economic growth slowed to an annual rate of just 1.5 percent in the second quarter of this year, as consumers cut back sharply on spending.

The White House budget office also predicts for this year that the economy will grow at a modest 2.6 percent annual rate and that the jobless rate will average 8 percent. It forecasts modest growth of 2.6 percent next year ? down from the 3.0 percent it predicted in February ? before rising to 4.0 percent in 2014. Unemployment would remain above 7 percent through the end of 2014, registering at 7.3 percent, the report predicts.

"The economic recovery that began in 2009 will continue at a moderate rate and unemployment will gradually decline," Jeffrey Zients, the acting White House budget director said in a blog post. "The economy still faces significant headwinds," he added.

The 2012 budget year ends on Sept. 30. The White House also predicted that next year's deficit will fall just short of $1 trillion, higher than it predicted in its February budget release. The predicted deficit for 2012 actually improved by $116 billion, but some of that was because Congress didn't enact much of Obama's jobs plan.

But the White House promises deficits will drop to about 3 percent of the size of the economy by 2017, in part through $1.5 trillion in tax increases over the coming decade.

The White House report ? released Friday afternoon with the Olympics poised to distract voters for two weeks ? again trumpets Obama's longstanding approach to tackling the deficit. It includes tax increases on families earning above $250,000, already enacted "caps" on agency operating budgets and modest savings from federal benefit programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

"Since taking office, the president has worked to restore fiscal responsibility," says the OMB report.

Republicans scoffed, noting that Obama has violated his promise to wrestle the deficit in half by the end of his term.

"The president's string of broken promises on our nation's fiscal challenges weighs heavy on an anemic economy," said House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis. "The president's commitment to ever-higher government spending and his failure to deliver on his economic promises have resulted in the fourth-straight budget deficit in excess of one trillion dollars."

Under Obama's budget plan, the total U.S. debt would reach $16.2 trillion by the end of the year and soar to $25.4 trillion at the end of a decade's time.

"America can have robust economic growth ? and avert a catastrophic debt crisis ? but it requires a credible fiscal plan and the leadership necessary to achieve it," said top Senate Budget Committee Republican, Jeff Sessions of Alabama.

The government is likely to reach its borrowing cap ? the subject of a fierce fight last summer between Obama and Republicans ? late this year or early next year, which is going to require the next Congress and either Romney or Obama to act together to increase the borrowing cap. That is seen by many as an opportunity to force lawmakers to finally tackle the country's major budget problems.

Also looming is the so-called fiscal cliff, a combination of big tax increases and deep, automatic budget cuts slated to begin in January unless Obama and congressional Republicans step in to block them this fall or during a postelection session of Congress. Many economists say that if the government plunges over the fiscal cliff it could drive the economy back into recession.

Romney, for his part, offers relatively few specifics on the budget but promises to bring total government spending down to 20 percent of the U.S. economy by the end of a first term in 2016. That is roughly in line with where it was during Republican George W. Bush's presidency. Government spending now equals 24 percent of gross domestic product.

Net Neutrality Violates the First and Fifth Amendments | Cato @ Liberty

In December 2010, the FCC adopted Preserving the Open Internet, a ?network neutrality? order regulating broadband internet access service. Issued under authority (ostensibly) derived from 24 disparate provisions of federal communications law, Preserving the Open Internet is predicated on three basic rules: transparency, no blocking, and no discrimination.

Broadly speaking, ?transparency? requires broadband providers to ?disclose network management practices, performance characteristics, and terms and conditions of services.? The ?no blocking? rule forbids fixed broadband providers from ?blocking lawful content, applications, services, and non-harmful devices.? Meanwhile, mobile broadband providers are restricted from blocking ?lawful websites? and certain applications. The ?No Discrimination? rule prohibits broadband providers from unreasonable discrimination in transmitting lawful network traffic.

The promulgation of the FCC?s network neutrality order will have serious consequences for the constitutional rights of broadband providers. One such provider, Verizon, now seeks to challenge the FCC order in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. This week, Cato joined TechFreedom, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, and the Free State Foundation, on a brief?urging the court to uphold Verizon?s First and Fifth Amendment rights.

We first argue that the FCC order violates broadband providers? First Amendment rights by compelling speech, forcing them to transmit messages from content providers that they might not wish to convey, preventing them from transmitting messages they want to convey, prohibiting them from exercising editorial discretion, and generally restricting the mode and content of their communications. Because the order singles out certain speakers, it demands ?strict scrutiny,? which it cannot survive because it neither serves a compelling governmental interest nor is narrowly tailored. We next argue that the FCC order violates broadband providers? Fifth Amendment rights by subjecting them to physical and regulatory takings. The FCC order enacts a physical taking by granting the content providers an unrestricted right to occupy property while slicing through the bundle of property rights broadband providers enjoy as network owners. The order essentially gives the content providers unlimited use of the network owners? physical property without any compensation, forbidding the rightful owners from exercising their right to control the use of their property and exclude others.

Furthermore, in forcing network owners to give network space to content providers, the regulation shifts costs to consumers, discouraging them from using broadband service and thus diminishing the network?s economic value. The FCC order also constitutes a regulatory taking because it prevents broadband providers from attaining their networks? full economic value and subverts network owners? reasonable investment-backed expectations. Finally, we argue that the FCC?s assertion of authority to regulate the Internet is a dangerous aggrandizement of agency power. In sum, while seeking to benefit content providers, the FCC has promulgated a regulation that violates the First and Fifth Amendment rights of broadband providers.

The case of Verizon v. FCC will be argued at the D.C. Circuit later this summer.

UPS sees slower growth; stock falls

Shares of United Parcel Service sank 4 percent to just below $75 Tuesday after the world?s largest package-delivery company reported a drop in international package sales, which pulled quarterly earnings below analysts? estimates.

Seen as a bellwether for the U.S. economy because it ships all sorts of products, UPS cut its full-year earnings forecast, citing a weakening global economy for the remainder of the year. The Atlanta- based company also reported second-quarter earnings that fell short of Wall Street expectations.

?Increasing uncertainty in the United States, continuing weakness in Asia exports and the debt crisis in Europe are impacting projections of economic expansion,? Scott Davis, chairman and CEO of UPS, said in a statement.

?Throughout its history, UPS has maintained its strength in all economic cycles and we are making the adjustments necessary to respond to today?s challenging conditions,? Davis added.

Donald Broughton, a transportation analyst at Avondale Partners, says UPS is suffering from the economic difficulties now plaguing Europe, where UPS derives 14 percent of its revenue. Package volume is down 3 percent in the region, and pricing is down over 5 percent, he said.

?You just can?t face those kinds of headwinds when that?s 14 percent of your revenue and still bring the bottom line number home,? he told CNBC.

The recent UPS deal to acquire European package carrier TNT Express will double the company?s exposure to Europe, Broughton said, and it could prove to be a thorn in the company?s side.

?So they?re doubling down on a bet on an economy that?s decelerating,? he said. ?That doesn?t bode well for the stock in the near and the intermediate term.?

Broughton said he prefers shares of shipper FedEx, which has greater exposure to Asia and is trading at ?a severe discount to UPS.?

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? A man spotted dressed in a goat suit among a herd of wild goats in the mountains of northern Utah has been identified as a hunter preparing for a Canadian archery season.

After a hiker spotted the so-called goat man on July 15 in the mountains above Ogden, about 40 miles north of Salt Lake City, wildlife officials said they wanted to talk to the person to be certain he was aware of the dangers as hunting season approaches.

They speculated he might have been an extreme wildlife enthusiast who just wanted to get as close as possible to the goats. A few days after the spotting, state wildlife authorities received an anonymous call from an "agitated man" who simply said, "Leave goat man alone. He's done nothing wrong."

This week, however, the mystery was solved.

Phil Douglass of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said he received a call Monday from a 57-year-old Southern California hunter who explained he was merely trying out his goat suit in preparation for a mountain goat hunt in Canada next year.

"He gave me enough details about the area and the situation that it made me feel confident this was him," Douglass said Tuesday.

"In talking to him, I felt he was very knowledgeable, a very experienced hunter. He's hunted internationally," Douglass added. "My concern all along was that this person needed to understand the risks, and certainly after talking to him, I felt he was doing the best he could to understand and mitigate those risks ... He was simply preparing for a hunt."

The man did not identify himself, Douglass said, noting the hunter was concerned for his safety after widespread media coverage of the sighting, first reported by the Standard-Examiner of Ogden.

Coty Creighton, 33, spotted the goat man July 15 during his hike. He said he came across a herd, but noticed something odd about one goat that was trailing behind the rest.

"I thought maybe it was injured," Creighton said last week. "It just looked odd."

He said he pulled out binoculars to get a closer look at the goats about 200 yards away and was shocked. The man appeared to be acting like a goat while wearing a crudely made costume, which had fake horns and a cloth mask with cut-out eye holes, Creighton said.

"We were the only ones around for miles," he said. "It was real creepy."

Douglass said 60 permits will be issued for goat hunting season in that area, which begins in September, and he had worried the man in the goat suit might be accidentally shot or could be attacked by a real goat.

He said the hunter described the goat costume as merely a hooded painter's uniform and a fleece.

Douglass said wildlife officials encourage archery hunters to practice their skills and to "get themselves in a position where they make a clean and humane shot."

"That's exactly what he was doing," Douglass said. "There are laws that require people to wear hunter orange during rifle hunts, but people do wear camo during archery hunts."

And while it's not illegal to dress up like the animal you're trying to kill, Douglass said it's still dangerous.

"It's unwise," he said. "It's just a bad idea all the way around to do that kind of thing."

US court upholds new rules for airline tickets

WASHINGTON?? U.S. regulators acted within their authority when they imposed new airline ticketing rules, such as requiring that the total price including taxes be prominently displayed in print advertisements, a federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday.

The ruling is a defeat for Allegiant Travel Co, Southwest Airlines Co and Spirit Airlines Inc, which challenged all or some of the rules.

Evidence submitted "sufficiently support the intuitive conclusion that customers are likely to be deceived by price quotes significantly lower than the actual cost of travel," Judge David Tatel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit wrote.

Equipment lease finance industry confidence improves | Better Roads

Looks like there is a glimmer of hope in the construction/equipment sector.

Although we already know the equipment rental market has been going gangbusters, the?Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) July 2012 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) released today shows that financing equipment is looking up. The index found that?confidence in the equipment finance market is 51.5, up from the June index of 48.5. According to the Foundation, this however reflects continuing concern about external economic factors and regulatory and political uncertainty.

The index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $628 billion equipment finance sector.

When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI survey respondent Russell D. Nelson, president, Farm Credit Leasing Services Corporation, said, ?Continued volatility/uncertainty at home and abroad may inhibit planned/needed capital expenditures during the next six months, but low interest rates and tax incentives will enable our industry to generate modest increases in asset volume and profitability through the remainder of 2012.?

He added, ?Improving credit quality, stable earnings, and demand for innovative/creative lease and loan products should position our industry for improved growth in 2013 and beyond.?

The?July 2012 Survey Results are as follows:

When asked to assess their business conditions during the next four months, 6.5 percent of executives responding said they believe business conditions will improve over the next four months, down from 8.1 percent in June. 71 percent of respondents believe business conditions will remain the same over the next four months, up from 64.9 percent in June. 22.6 percent believe business conditions will worsen, down from 27 percent the previous month.

12.9 percent of survey respondents believe demand for leases and loans to fund capital expenditures (capex) will increase over the next four months, an increase from 8.1 percent in June. 71 percent believe demand will ?remain the same? during the same four-month time period, up from 64.9 percent the previous month. 16.1 percent believe demand will decline, down from 27 percent in June.

19.4 percent of executives expect more access to capital to fund equipment acquisitions over the next four months, up from 10.8 percent in June. 77.4 percent of survey respondents indicate they expect the ?same? access to capital to fund business, a decrease from 86.5 percent the previous month. 3.2 percent survey respondents expect ?less? access to capital, up from 2.7 percent who expected less access in June.

When asked, 35.5 percent of the executives reported they expect to hire more employees over the next four months, up from 24.3 percent in June. 64.5 percent expect no change in headcount over the next four months, virtually unchanged from 64.9 percent last month, while no one expects fewer employees, down from 10.8 percent in June.

71 percent of the leadership evaluates the current U.S. economy as ?fair,? down from 78.4 percent last month. 29 percent rate it as ?poor,? up from 21.6 percent in June.

9.7 percent of survey respondents believe thatU.S.economic conditions will get ?better? over the next six months, up from 8.1 percent in June. 71 percent of survey respondents indicate they believe the U.S. economy will ?stay the same? over the next six months, up from 64.9 percent in June. 19.4 percent believe economic conditions in theU.S.will worsen over the next six months, a decrease from 27 percent who believed so last month.

In July, 25.8 percent of respondents indicate they believe their company will increase spending on business development activities during the next six months, down from 29.7 percent in June. 71 percent believe there will be ?no change? in business development spending, up slightly from 70.3 percent last month, and 3.2 percent believe there will be a decrease in spending, up from no one who believed so last month.
